Faculty Highlights: Academic Year 2022–23
New York Law School faculty are dedicated educators and renowned experts in their respective fields. Their scholarship and professional achievements advance the rule of law and legal educational excellence in New York, across the nation, and around the world. These items represent a sample of the activities of NYLS’s full-time faculty.
Professor Heidi K. Brown was appointed Associate Dean for Upper Level Writing and Professor of Legal Writing at NYLS.
Professor Anna G. Cominsky ’05 was appointed a Professor of Law at NYLS.
Dean and President Anthony W. Crowell was appointed to the City Planning Commission by Mayor Eric Adams. He was also elected to serve a three-year term on the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Executive Committee.
Professor Kris Franklin was named the Wallace Stevens Professor of Law at NYLS.
Professor Lisa Grumet was appointed a Professor of Law at NYLS.
Professor Gerald Korngold was named the Trustee Professor of Law at NYLS.
New York Times Best Selling Author Professor Molly Guptill Manning was appointed Associate Professor of Law.
Associate Professor Justin Murray was chosen to be the Chair Elect of the Criminal Procedure Section of AALS. In this role, he will develop programs that afford opportunities for junior scholars in the criminal procedure field to present their research and receive feedback and mentorship from senior colleagues.
Professor Lynn Boepple Su was appointed Dean for Advocacy and Co-Curricular Programs at NYLS.
The following faculty were appointed to the Professor From Practice Program: Andrew Berman, Gaynor Cunningham, Catharine Du Bois, Erik W. Lane ’15, Michael Pastor, and Amy Wallace.
Dean and President Anthony W. Crowell was named to City & State New York’s 2023 Law Power 100 list, the Higher Education Power 100 list, and the Pride 100 list. He is one of two law deans named to the Law Power list and the only law dean to named to the Higher Education Power list.
At the 2023 Annual Meeting of the AALS, the Section on Academic Support presented Wallace Stevens Professor of Law Kris Franklin with a Legacy in Leadership Award for her outstanding work as a scholar, academic innovator, and mentor.
Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Institutional Strategy Matt Gewolb earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College.
Ernst C. Stiefel Professor of Comparative Law Ruti G. Teitel was invited to serve on the board of the Journal of Rule of Law and Constitutionalism at the University Externado of Colombia.
Carolina Academic Press published the second edition of Wallace Stevens Professor of Law Kris Franklin’s book Legal Reasoning Case Files.
Professor Richard Chused authored “Quantum Copyright Law: Schrödinger’s Cat, Banksy’s Shredder, and Art on the Edge” in the Northwestern School of Law Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property.
Professor of Law from Practice Shahrokh Falati ’08 authored “How ChatGPT Challenges Current Intellectual Property Laws” in the New York Law Journal and “A Singular Disclosure Requirement is Necessary for Patent Law” in The Columbia Science and Technology Law Review.
Wallace Stevens Professor of Law Kris Franklin and Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Law F. Peter Phillips ’87 authored “Pass the Salt: Problem-Resolution Lawyering Across the Twenty-First Century Law Curriculum” in the Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal.
Trustee Professor Gerald Korngold authored a policy focus report entitled “Land Value in the United States: Funding Infrastructure and Local Government Service,” which was published by Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
Associate Professor Justin Murray authored “Preface: New Directions in Prosecutorial Reform” in the American Criminal Law Review.
Professor of Law from Practice Michael Pastor authored “Cybersecurity and abortion success: The right to choose now means the right to protect data and privacy for women and providers” in the New York Daily News.
Joseph Solomon Distinguished Professor Rebecca Roiphe co-authored “Is NY’s New Professional Conduct Rule 8.4(g) Heading to the Courts?” in the New York Law Journal and “A Fiduciary Theory of Progressive Prosecution” in the American Criminal Law Review.

Otto L. Walter Distinguished Professor of Tax Law Ann Thomas authored “The Racial Wealth Gap and the Tax Benefits of Homeownership” in the New York Law School Law Review.
Assistant Professor Claire R. Thomas ’11 authored “The So-Called Stateless: Firm Resettlement, African Immigrants, and Human Rights Violations in Mexico” in the Boston University Public Interest Law Journal.
Assistant Professor Amy Wallace authored “The Exclusion of Public Legal Education from Mandatory and Aspirational State Pro Bono Service Requirements” in the Loyola Journal of Public Interest Law.
Associate Professor Britney Wilson authored “Making Me Ill: Environmental Racism and Justice as Disability” in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
John Marshall Harlan II Professor Penelope Andrews appeared on international media outlets such as SABC News to provide insight on American legal topics such as the FBI’s investigation into former President Trump’s handling of classified documents and their search warrant.
In addition to being a regular legal expert for the Law & Crime Network, Professor Kirk D. Burkhalter ’04 appeared on local and national media outlets, including CBS, Metrofocus, and C-Span, to discuss breaking news on policing, gun violence, and legal issues. He provided his expertise on topics including the police shooting of Jayland Walker, the suspension of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson for sexual assault, the defamation trial against Alex Jones, the trial of the Parkland shooter, a controversial proposal in San Francisco to allow police to deploy robots capable of using deadly force, and the police killing of Tyre Nichols.
Professor Anna G. Cominsky ’05 appeared on local and national media outlets, including CBS, LiveNOW from FOX, and USA Today, to address legal topics related to criminal law and criminal justice reforms, including several of the cases against former President Trump and the subway death of Jordan Neely and the indictment of Daniel Penny.
As a CBS News legal analyst, Joseph Solomon Distinguished Professor Rebecca Roiphe regularly appeared on national TV to analyze breaking legal and political news, including the charges against former Trump Organization executive Allen Weisselberg, the many cases against former President Trump, the police killing of Tyre Nichols, and other headline stories. She is a widely sought-after legal expert for her scholarship in criminal law, ethics, and legal history in addition to her experience as a former Manhattan prosecutor, and she has also appeared on numerous other national outlets, including Bloomberg, CNN, and MSNBC.
Professors Susan J. Abraham, Penelope Andrews, Kirk D. Burkhalter ’04, Kris Franklin, and Andrew Scherer presented at a conference in South Africa entitled “Reckoning with the Past, Constitutional Transformation and Ubuntu: Honoring the Work of Judge Margaret Victor.” Professor Andrews co-led the conference, Professor Abraham presented on “How Teaching Restorative Justice is itself Restorative,” Professor Burkhalter presented on “Teaching About Race and Policing in New York City,” Professor Franklin co-presented on “Judge Margaret Victor’s Jurisprudence of Context,” and Professor Scherer presented on “Summary Eviction Proceedings and Race: A Perspective from New York”.
Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success Shane Dizon presented at the 2022 Annual Conference for the Northeast Consortium of Academic Success Professionals, hosted virtually by Suffolk University Law School.
Stephen J. Ellmann Dean for Clinical and Experiential Learning Kim Hawkins presented at the 2023 AALS Clinical Conference on right-to-counsel and the role of law school clinics.
Professor Gowri J. Krishna spoke on a panel for the AALS Community Economic Development Section about representing immigrant-owned businesses. She also co-chaired the 2023 Clinical Legal Education Association's (CLEA) New Clinicians Conference and presented two sessions at the 2023 AALS Clinical Conference.
Dean of Faculty and the Rita and Joseph Solomon Professor of Wills, Trusts, and Estates William P. LaPiana taught two lectures at the 2023 New Judges Seminar, and gave presentations on the proposed New York Trust Code to the Surrogate’s Court Estates and Trusts Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and to the Central New York Estate Planning Council in Syracuse.
Professor Richard D. Marsico presented his paper, "The Intersection of Race, Wealth, and Special Education: The Role of Structural Inequities in the IDEA," at the Oxford Education Research Symposium.
Associate Professor Justin Murray and Joseph Solomon Distinguished Professor Rebecca Roiphe were distinguished speakers in the Georgetown Law American Criminal Law Review’s 2022 Symposium of Reform-Minded Prosecution.
Assistant Professor Gabriel Pell presented at the "Criminal Case Law Update: Developments in Cyber and Digital Evidence" panel, hosted by the Social Law Library in Boston, Massachusetts.
Professor Andrew Scherer was a featured speaker at the “Fair Housing Protects, Knowledge Empowers: Increasing Equity Through Policy, Practice and Education” Conference, organized by the New York State Division of Human Rights and the New York City Commission on Human Rights and co-sponsored by the Wilf Impact Center.
Associate Professor David Simson spoke about the 14th Amendment Doctrine and presented on “Methodological Gerrymandering and Social Hierarchy in the Supreme Court’s Interpretations of 14th Amendment Rights” in the Cleveland State Law Review Symposium at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He also presented on methodological gerrymandering at the 2023 Law and Society Association Annual Meeting in addition to chairing two panels.
Ernst C. Stiefel Professor of Comparative Law Ruti G. Teitel presented on international law and transitional justice at the spoke at a conference on International Legal Theory and the Cognitive Turn, hosted by the University of Hamburg in Germany.
Assistant Professor Claire R. Thomas ’11 presented at the Law and Society Association’s 2022 Global Meeting on Law and Society 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Assistant Professor Amy Wallace presented the European Network for Clinical Education’s 2022 Conference, hosted by the University of Brecia in Italy and at the Global Alliance for Justice Conference held at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
