Providing Stipends for New York Law School Students Working for the Federal, State or City Governments. The Fund Received Initial Gifts from former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Chandler Tagliabue and NYLS Board Chair Arthur Abbey ‘59 and Diane Abbey
New York Law School is proud to announce the launch of The Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler Fellowship Fund, which will encourage and support New York Law School students to consider careers in government.
The Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler Fund was established in honor of Professor Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler with initial grants from their friends, former National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Chandler Tagliabue, and from New York Law School Board Chair Arthur Abbey and Diane Abbey.
The Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler Fund will provide stipends to support New York Law School students who work as an intern for a federal, state or city government agency during their summer break or during the school year. The governmental agencies that employ the New York Law School students need not be located in New York City.
Anthony W. Crowell, NYLS Dean and President, said that “Ross Sandler is an extraordinary leader who has dedicated his life to supporting public service in New York and beyond. Establishing the Center for New York City Law at New York Law School thirty years ago cemented our law school as a launching pad for public service legal careers, and a forum where lawyers and policy and civic leaders come together for substantive and meaningful dialogue. I am eternally grateful for Professor Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler’s support, partnership, and friendship, and this is a fitting tribute to their unwavering belief in the power of a career in government.”
Professor Ross Sandler said that “We want to encourage the best of our law students to consider government for their legal career. As was often repeated by Mayor Edward I. Koch under whom I served as New York City Commissioner of Transportation, ‘Public service is the most noble of professions if it’s done honestly and if it’s done well.’ The Fund in our name will provide New York Law School students with the opportunity to experience the joy and satisfaction of working for the government.”
A minimum of two stipends will be awarded each academic year. All currently matriculated students at New York Law School are eligible. Applications from first-year law students will be encouraged.
The Center for New York City Law, founded in 1994 by Professor Ross Sandler, has been a foundational part of why New York Law School considers itself “New York’s Law School,” with its diverse offerings dedicated to New York City and State law, and an unmatched set of courses, academic centers, and faculty. The stipends provided by The Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler Fellowship Fund will further help NYLS students who want to enter government service.
The Ross Sandler and Alice M. Sandler Fellowship Fund will accept further contributions and hopes to grow over the coming years to assist a larger number of law students seeking careers in government.
